Ingredients

  • one 28 oz / 795 g can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons chili powder
  • 3 tablespoons taco or Southwestern seasoning
  • half an onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1 jalapeno, ribs and seeds removed
  • ½ teaspoon salt (more to taste)

Method

Preparation
  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend until the sauce is smooth and the onion, garlic, and jalapeno pieces are fully incorporated.
  3. Use immediately, or simmer the blended sauce for extra flavor depth if desired.

Notes

For more flavor and depth, simmer the sauce together for 15-30 minutes, though it can also be used straight from the blender. The sauce freezes well. Nutrition is calculated for half a cup (1/8th of the recipe). A previous version used 28 ounces of water by refilling the tomato can once, but the recipe was updated to use 1 cup of water after reader feedback and additional testing.
